Eight campus novels with a darker edge
Knowledge, ambition and belonging with an unsettling edge.
An academic setting becomes particularly compelling when learning is inseparable from power. Who is admitted, who is believed, which knowledge matters and what a student must give up to belong can all become urgent questions. These books put different kinds of institutions under pressure, from universities and conservatories to magical schools. Their appeal lies in the intensity of a closed social world, where admiration and rivalry can be difficult to separate.
Dark academia is a reading mood as well as a convenient label, so the novels here do not all operate in the same genre. Some use fantasy or horror; others find their darkness in relationships, prejudice and institutional behaviour. There are also adult and young-adult choices, with substantial differences in content. Choose for the particular premise, and check individual guidance if you need to avoid violence, abuse or other difficult material.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
M. L. Rio places a tightly connected group of Shakespeare students in a conservatory where the roles they perform become entangled with their relationships. The specialised setting gives the novel a distinctive language and a strong sense of enclosure. Choose it if you want theatre and friendship at the centre of the academic atmosphere, especially when the boundary between acting a part and becoming trapped in other people's expectations is what draws you in.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Alex Stern enters Yale through an unusual opportunity linked to her ability to see ghosts, and becomes involved with the university's occult societies. Leigh Bardugo combines institutional privilege with supernatural danger, making access to an elite world a complicated bargain. Pick this for adult fantasy with a dark campus setting rather than a gentle magical-school story; the book includes disturbing material, and its concern with power reaches beyond the pleasures of secret rooms and rituals.
