Books Like The Silent Patient: 10 Twisty Reads to Devour Next
Unreliable narrators, locked wards and endings you will want to argue about: ten psychological thrillers to read after Alicia Berenson.
The Silent Patient has one of the simplest hooks in modern crime fiction: a painter shoots her husband five times and never speaks another word. Then it hands the story to Theo Faber, the psychotherapist who talks his way into the secure unit where she is held, convinced he can make her speak. His narration is braided with Alicia's diary, the chapters are short enough to promise yourself just one more, and the whole thing builds a slow, claustrophobic unease rather than reaching for gore. And then there is the ending, which we will not go near.
What we looked for, then, was that exact mix. Psychological rather than procedural. A narrator you slowly learn to doubt. A domestic or institutional setting that closes in. A reveal that reframes everything you have read, rather than just naming a culprit. Some of these are darker than the anchor and one is considerably more explicit; we flag both. None of them is spoiled below, and we would ask you to extend the same courtesy to whoever you lend them to.
What to read after The Silent Patient
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
Millie needs a job and a place to live, and a live-in post with the wealthy Winchester family looks like a lifeline, even if her room in the attic has a door that only locks from the outside. Nina Winchester is charming one minute and vicious the next, and her husband seems far too kind to be married to her. Short chapters, a narrator with secrets of her own and a turn that readers compare directly to Michaelides; it is the natural next read after Alicia.
