14 read-alouds worth repeating
Last week, I shared my ten favorite read-alouds from the school year. But I only told part of the story — I omitted deeper backlist books, instead sharing the new-to-me read-alouds that I fell in love with this year.
Today, I’m sharing a round-up of backlist read-alouds that I return to year after year, along with the context.
Books for discussing genre
Every year, I do an intro to genres unit with 2nd-5th, re-introducing our ROYGBIV genre system and sharing picture book examples of key genres. I like to mix up the line-up each year, but here are a handful that I have on repeat:
The Skunk by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Patrick McDonnell: this is one hell of a genre-bender, challenging kids to put their knowledge of genre and text-based evidence to work as they attempt to categorize it.
Life on Mars by Jon Agee: my go-to for teaching sci-fi.
